HEPCA Participates in National Workshop on Biodiversity and Carbon Markets in Egypt

The workshop was organized by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and implemented with Plus Egypt for Consulting & Services. It brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from government entities, the Financial Regulatory Authority, the Egyptian Exchange, research centers, universities, international organizations, civil society organizations, local communities, and the private sector.

The event aimed to enhance national understanding of biodiversity-carbon markets, support stakeholders in implementing biodiversity-based carbon projects, and strengthen coordination among institutions to identify priority ecosystems, institutional gaps, and data and Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) needs. The workshop also contributed to building capacities toward establishing a national platform and technical framework for biodiversity-based carbon credits.

Throughout the two-day program, technical sessions addressed key topics such as biodiversity as a carbon asset, blue carbon and nature-based solutions, carbon sequestration in mangroves, seagrass, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems, as well as the fundamentals of voluntary and compliance carbon markets, international standards, and MRV requirements. A panel discussion highlighted Egypt’s policy and institutional landscape and the role of biodiversity in national climate strategies.

HEPCA’s participation reflects its continued role in linking scientific research, field experience, and policy development, particularly in the Red Sea region. Through its long-standing work in marine conservation, protected area management, and blue carbon ecosystems, HEPCA contributes to national efforts that integrate biodiversity protection and climate action.

The workshop concluded with stakeholder inputs to inform the national framework and a field visit to Abu Monkar Island, where participants observed mangrove and coral reef ecosystems, highlighting the importance of on-the-ground data and site-based conservation in developing effective biodiversity-carbon projects.
