Training Sessions to relaunch HEPCA's Turtlewatch Program

During recent weeks HEPCA has been holding training sessions to relaunch the TurtleWatch Program.

The HEPCA's TurtleWatch program is based on the principle of “Observe to Conserve” and is designed to collect information from professional and recreational divers on sea turtle abundance and distribution. Data collected by volunteers at sea have proven to be very useful in a number of surveys targeting coral reefs, marine mammals, fish and now turtles

Recent studies suggest that many recreational divers consider being involved in data collection or observation programs as an opportunity to contribute to the conservation of the marine environment

Started in 2011 by HEPCA, TurtleWatch-Egypt is a citizen science project aimed at strengthening marine turtle conservation in the Red Sea. Since the inception of the project more than 2,000 sightings of sea turtles have been reported and helped identify important areas for marine turtles

We would like to thank all those who have attended sessions in Hurghada and Marsa Alam.
