Long Awaited Victory for Shark and Manta Protection

In a move that has been long-overdue, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is finally voting to increase protection for five species of sharks, as well as two species of manta rays. In addition to oceanic white tip sharks, proposals to increase protection for three species of hammerhead sharks – scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead, and smooth hammerhead; porbeagle sharks; and manta rays were adopted. Right now is the time to be as vocal as possible about shark protection and exert as much pressure as we possibly can. There is still a final decision-making session later this week to conclude the recommendations made throughout the week. If enacted, the votes would place the five shark species and all manta rays in Appendix II of CITES – an action that means increased protection, but still allows legal and sustainable trade. This is an important step forward and proves that shark protection is an issue that we can no longer afford to ignore. "Sharks and manta rays are extremely important to the ocean ecosystems," said Sam Rauch, of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "The global protection that CITES offers these incredible species will complement existing international shark protection measures by ensuring their trade is sustainable and does not threaten their survival. We are thrilled these important shark and ray proposals were adopted and applaud the leadership of the many countries that helped us get there." CITES is an international agreement initiated in 1973 and is currently signed by 178 countries regulating global trade in imperiled wild animals and plants including their parts and products. A meeting of the Conference of the Parties is held every 2-3 years to review, discuss, and negotiate changes in the management and control of trade in the various wildlife species covered by the agreement. We can only hope that CITES will work harder towards further protection of endangered species and be more stringent with their policies. The fact that "legal and sustainable trade" of sharks like hammerheads and oceanic white-tips will continue is unacceptable to us. In 2010, CITES permitted 3 captive dolphins from Japan to be brought into a Hurghada dolphinarium, despite our community's objections and protests. Two years later and these poor dolphins are still being held captive in their Dolphinarium jail cell just south of Hurghada. We expect more from you CITES and the time to act is now!
