Beneath the Surface: HEPCA’s Mooring Team Keeps the Red Sea’s Coral Reefs Safe

Every morning, the team descends into the sea carrying heavy equipment, navigating strong currents, and spending long hours underwater to inspect, maintain, and reinstall environmentally friendly mooring buoys. Their work often goes unnoticed, yet it is essential to safeguarding the Red Sea's coral reefs from anchor damage.

Every mooring buoy maintained means one less anchor dropped onto living coral.

For more than three decades, the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) has pioneered the development and maintenance of environmentally friendly mooring systems across the Egyptian Red Sea. These systems provide safe mooring points for dive boats while eliminating the need to anchor directly on fragile coral reefs, allowing marine tourism and conservation to thrive together.

During June 2026, HEPCA’s Mooring Team continued this mission with remarkable dedication across the Red Sea:

  • 100 dive sites visited
  • 470 mooring buoys inspected
  • 65 moorings maintained and repaired
  • 20 moorings re-installed
  • 5 underwater cleanup operations completed
  • 98% of the Red Sea mooring network remained operational

These figures represent much more than routine maintenance.

They represent coral reefs that continue to grow undisturbed.
Marine life that can flourish in healthy habitats.
Divers who experience thriving underwater ecosystems.
And future generations who will inherit a Red Sea worth protecting.

Behind every successful conservation effort are dedicated professionals who work quietly beneath the waves. Divers, technicians, captains, and support crews contribute their expertise every day to ensure the Red Sea remains one of the world's premier diving destinations and one of its most extraordinary marine ecosystems.

HEPCA extends its sincere appreciation to the Egyptian authorities, Ministry of Local Development and Environment, Red Sea Marine Protected Areas and every member of the Mooring Team whose commitment, professionalism, and passion continue to make a lasting difference.

Protecting coral reefs is not a one-time project—it is a promise renewed every single day.
