Join the Red Sea Dolphin Project

Last Summer HEPCA launched the Red Sea Dolphin Project (RSDP), the first boat-based research project set up in Egypt, completely dedicated to improving the existing knowledge of Red Sea cetaceans and advance our understanding of their ecology and distribution. The summer expedition of the RSDP carried out last June and August brought along results beyond any favourable expectations. In 46 days at sea, we navigated more than 3500 km in almost pristine areas between Marsa Alam and the Sudanese border, we spotted Silky sharks, Manta rays, sea turtles, thousands of terns, gulls and gannets, dugongs and we had 90 encounters with dolphins belonging to 6 species: bottlenose dolphins (both common and indo-pacific – Tursiops truncatus and T. aduncus, respectively), spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris), pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) and humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis). The first cruises can be considered a great success! Follow the news and read impressions and comments of our ecovolunteers about the RSDP adventures on our blog: redseadolphinproject.wordpress.com. The RSDP is not made only for researchers! Everybody can join us on board, work with us and get involved in any aspect of the expedition. You have now the unique opportunity to join the next cruises and help HEPCA to contribute directly to the research and conservation of the marine environment in one of the richest and most biodiverse seas in the world, the Red Sea.
