Hurghada Citizen Exposes Turtle Harassment

It’s been just a week since we exposed a Sinai hotel decorating their New Year buffet with a shark corpse. We are now confirming more disturbing news for another endangered species; the hawksbill turtle. On January 24, 2013, a concerned Hurghada citizen named Lana Kravchenko published a series of photos and video to her Facebook profile. The disturbing images show a young man on board a boat named "Gorgona," carelessly holding a hawksbill turtle. The man then places the helpless turtle on the boat deck floor while people around him whistle and cheer. A guest that was on the boat during the incident took the short video on January 22. This guest acted very responsibly and delivered the video to her local travel agency before returning home. Not only is this behavior illegal and irresponsible; it also shows a blatant ignorance on the part of the guides and guests. Turtles are classified as critically endangered species by the IUCN and are under very real threat all across the Red Sea. The main threats to sea turtles come from irresponsible coastal development, artificial lighting and irresponsible anchoring that destroy nesting beaches and feeding grounds such as sea-grass beds and coral reefs; garbage and plastic bags which could be ingested by mistake by turtles and will provoke a slow and painful death; pollution in the water that is often associated with diseases like the fibropapilloma tumor; high speed boats and jet-skis that can seriously wound sea turtles and cause their death; incidental fishing in particular in industrial trawlers and purse seines. We want to assure our community that the culprits of this criminal activity will be held accountable. HEPCA has already contacted the National Parks and we will continue to keep you updated with this story as it develops. مواطنين الغردقه يفضحون الانتهاكات التى تتعرض لها السلاحف البحريه لم يمض اكثر من اسبوع على فضيحه الفندق السياحى الواقع بمدينه شرم الشيخ الذى قام بعرض سمكه قرش عشيه رأس السنه كنوع من عوامل الجذب السياحى !و كأن هذا غير كافى, نحن الان بصدد الكشف عن مماراسات و انتهاكات ترتكب بحق نوع اخر من الكائنات البحريه المهدده بالانقراض و هى السلحفاه صقريه المنقار فى 24 يناير, قامت "لانا كرافيشنكو" , و هى من سكان مدينه الغردقه , بنشر صور و مقاطع مسجله على احدى مواقع التواصل الاجتماعى تظهر شاب فى مقتبل العمر على مركب سياحى "جورجونا" يحمل سلحفاه بحريه و يقوم بألقائها على ظهر المركب وسط تهليل و تصفيق من المحيطين قامت احدى السائحات بتصوير ما جرى و ذلك فى يوم 22 يناير 2013 و قامت بتسليمه لشركه السياحه التابعه لها قبل مغادرتها لمدينه الغردقه هذا التصرف الصادر عن هذا الشاب ليس فقط غير قانونى و غير مسؤول و لكنه ايضا يعكس تفشى الجهل بالانظمه البيئيه للبحر الاحمر من قبل بعض المرشدين البحريين و السائحين تعانى السلاحف البحريه بكافه فصائلها من اخطار عديده تهدد بأنقراضها و اختفائها من سواحل البحر الاحمر, و على سبيل المثال و ليس الحصر ردم و تجريف الشواطىء الجائر , الانوار الصناعيه و الرسوّ العشوائى للمراكب و اليخوت مما يؤدى الى تدمير البيئه الطبيعيه لوضع البيض ومصادر الغذاء كشعاب البحر و الطحالب للسلاحف البحريه الاكياس البلاستيكيه و المخلفات من العوامل الاخرى التى تتسبب بشكل كبير فى الانتقاص المستمر لاعداد السلاحف البحريه التى قد تتناولها عن طريق الخطأ مما يسبب لها خلل فى الجهاز الهضمى و من ثم موت مؤلم و بطىء تلوث المياه الذى غالبا ما يكون له علاقه بأصابه السلاحف البحريه بالاورام السرطانيه الخبيثه يعتبر هو الاخر من اهم التهديدات المراكب السريعه و اللانشات تلعب ايضا دور مهم فى اصابه القشره الخارجيه الحاميه للسلاحف و التى بالطبع تؤدى الى موتها الصيد الجائر و صيد الجرو الشباك يودى بحياه السلاحف التى تعلق فى الحبال و لا تستطيع تخليص نفسها جمعيه "هيبكا" تؤكد على تصديها لتلك المماراسات الغير قانونيه , و قد قمنا بالفعل بالاتصال بالهيئات المختصه بالمحافظه على البيئهو سوف نبقيكم على درايه بالتطورات
