FEEL for the Red Sea

FEEL (Future Egyptian Environmental Leaders) was launched in June 2012. It is HEPCA’s latest environmental awareness program, targeting Egyptian youth and offering them an intensive conservation program in the amazing well kept secret the city of Marsa Alam. During a five day/four night program FEEL gives young Egyptians the chance to learn the basics of diving and snorkeling experiencing the remarkable underwater world which is their heritage. Participants also have the opportunity to visit the international Dolphin house at Samadai and the chance of a life-changing experience of swimming with the Dolphins. Observing marine turtles in their feeding grounds, exploring the Mangrove forest of Qulaan and an introduction to practices and handicrafts of the local Bedouin community in the Red Sea fill the following days. The FEEL program started with 15 outstanding students plus from Al- Manar International Schools plus three Biology teachers from the same school. The students perceptions of Egypt’s natural resources and their value not only environmentally, but also economically for a developing country like Egypt was significantly enhanced. It was great to watch Egyptian students talking about solid waste management and Egyptian environmental issues, coming up with new ideas in the discussion groups. One comment from one of the students and here we quote “for most of us FEEL was a life changing experience”. HEPCA initiated FEEL in order to raise awareness among Egyptian youth of the importance of the conservation of our natural resources and to decrease the knowledge gap between stakeholders and environmental activists. At the end of the day these youth are our future leaders; their understanding of the values of our natural resources and environmental issues will mean that our future will be brighter.
