Egypt Goes Green - Solar Energy Project

On January 30, 2013 MENA's leading renewable energy consortium Deserttec Industrial Initiative (Dii) and the Egyptian State Authority for New & Renewable Energy (NREA ) signed an agreement that will accelerate Egypt's move towards renewable energy production. This alliance represents a new dawn for renewable energy development in Egypt and an unprecedented collaboration, which will encourage local businesses and institutions to invest in green technologies. The initiative is part of an international cooperation with stakeholders in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (EUMENA) that could provide an important impetus towards an integrated electricity market for this entire region. This strategic collaboration will pave the way for information exchange, and provide for solar and wind resource analysis, power transmission and grid capacity and expansion, performance of renewable energy generating technologies, legal frameworks, and incentive instruments for private investments, long-term opportunities for renewable energy electricity transfers from Egypt to the EU and Local support mechanisms for renewable energy projects in Egypt. The collaboration between Dii and NREA is an opportunity for Egypt to pioneer a new environmental trend in renewable energy technologies in the Middle East. Not only are these technologies the most forward thinking strategy economically and for sustainable development; they also have the potentially of ending our dependence on environmentally detrimental fossil fuels. Wind and solar renewable technologies have enormous potential for growth in Egypt. It is estimated that by 2020, renewable energy should account for 20% of the electricity production and could play a central role in satisfying the fast-growing national electricity demand. By 2050 Dii expects this to increase six-fold over that of 2010, to more than 800 Terrawatt an hours. Within the same period of time, the population could grow from over 80 to more than 120 million. Paul van Son, CEO of Dii states: “Egypt is pivotal for the economic and political development of the Arab world. Together, NREA and Dii will further the development of renewable energy in Egypt, thereby fulfilling an important prerequisite for the emergence of a market for desert power. Wind and solar could one day be the backbone of the Egyptian economy. For Dii, NREA is the perfect partner based on its extensive experience and drive in the renewable energy market.” HEPCA has always believed that renewable energy technologies are one of the primary ways in which we can protect the Red Sea environment. We will continue to advocate and pioneer for these technologies and are fortunate to be working with neighboring countries towards an integrated renewable energy framework for the region. About NREA: NREA is the prime renewable energy stakeholder in Egypt, it has been established 25 years ago as a pivotal entity to demonstrate RE applications in Egypt. NREA projects extend in wind, CSP, and photovoltaic all over Egypt. It has strong relationships with most regional and international entities working in RE. Furthermore, NREA role include building national capacities in RE fields for neighboring countries. About Dii: Together with its partners from 16 countries, Dii is looking to turn the Desertec vision into reality. Dii wants to contribute to the creation of an industrial-scale market for renewable energy from the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East by the year 2050.
