Coordinated Response to Dugong Sighting in Safaga Highlights Importance of Responsible Wildlife Reporting
Upon receiving verified visual evidence, the information was immediately relayed to the Red Sea Protectorates. Rangers conducted field visits and marine surveys in the area, maintaining close coordination with diving centers and relevant stakeholders.
Following on-site assessment, the dugong has been identified as a young female, approximately 1.3 meters in length and estimated to be between 2 to 3 years old. Observations indicate that the animal is active, in good condition, and able to feed naturally on seagrass within the area.
At this stage, specialists have confirmed that there is no immediate need for intervention or relocation. The dugong remains under continuous monitoring, with regular follow-ups to assess its condition and behavior. Decisions regarding any further action will be based on ongoing observations in the coming days.
While the reasons behind the dugong’s extended presence in shallow waters are still being studied, current indicators suggest normal feeding behavior and no immediate signs of distress.
Such situations require careful and responsible handling. Publicly sharing real-time locations or approaching the animal can unintentionally increase stress and interfere with its natural behavior — particularly for individuals still within early life stages.
Authorities strongly urge all visitors, divers, and water activity operators to:
- Avoid approaching or attempting to interact with the animal
- Maintain a safe distance at all times
- Refrain from any actions that may cause stress or disturbance
Dugongs are highly sensitive marine mammals, and minimizing human impact is essential to ensure their safety and survival.
This incident highlights both the importance of community reporting and the critical role of coordinated scientific assessment and monitoring in protecting vulnerable marine species in the Red Sea.
